Pines to Marsh 2025
What a road trip through Georgia! The Sight Line Provisions crew hit the ground running with none other than Davin Topel along for the ride. Here’s how it all went down:
Day 1: From ATL to the Piney Woods
We touched down in Atlanta and made our way to catch up with our buddy Tommy for a Shoal Bass mission. The plan was to hit the Flint River, but it was totally blown out. No worries—we pivoted. Spent the evening in the woods, getting ready for the next morning’s turkey hunt. Tommy also took us on a quick tour of the town of Gay, Georgia. Good vibes all around.
Day 2: Gobbles & Gratitude
The day started early—we were in the Piney woods before sunrise. Dead quiet at first. Not a single gobble... until 9AM. We were walking and stalking, getting settled in when Tommy hit the call—and boom, one turkey... then two... then seven Jakes came strutting in. I took my shot and missed (!), but managed to reload my single-shot 20 gauge and pull off a clean second shot. Got one!
As I went to retrieve the bird, I noticed something special—a metal band on its leg. Turns out the State of Georgia had trapped, banded, and released this young turkey earlier in the winter. A cool surprise. We stuck it out a bit longer, hoping to call in one of the longbeards, but they kept their distance. Davin had a shot lined up, but the Toms slipped away. Still, we were stoked. We processed the turkey and hit the road, heading east to Brunswick for the Golden Isles Fly Fishing Festival hosted by @otfoutfitters.
Day 3: Secret Sandbars & Chef-Made Turkey
We kicked the day off with a Secret Sandbar Party, courtesy of the On The Fly Outfitters crew. Davin was behind the bar, serving up his legendary micheladas while we caught up with friends in an unreal coastal setting.
To cap off this amazing day, local chef Dave Snyder took the turkey we harvested and worked his magic. He whipped up a Sweet Tea & Bourbon–brined turkey breast that blew everyone away. It was so good, we made plans to bring it to the next day's event to share with the crew.
Day 4: Books, Beers & Fly Fishing Vibes
The festival opened strong with a book talk and signing from Jim Barger Jr. and Dr. Carlton Hicks. They spoke about their new release, Jimmy Carter, Rivers & Dreams—a deep dive into President Carter’s lifelong love for fly fishing.
After that, we set up the SLP Trunk Show and hit the streets. Literally. The roads were shut down for the festival, and the On The Fly team crushed it. Such a well-run, community-driven event—and a perfect way to wrap up this Georgia adventure.
